Infants typically show a palmar grasp reflex, where they will curl their fingers around an object placed in their hand, from about 2 to 7 months of age. This reflexive action is part of their natural development as they begin to explore their environment. At this stage, the grasp is primarily involuntary; however, as they grow and develop, they transition into more intentional grasping and manipulation of objects.

During the age range of 0 to 2 months, infants are largely focused on reflexes and basic motor skills, and their grasping ability is not yet fully developed. The 8 to 12 months range marks a shift as infants begin to refine their motor skills, moving towards a more intentional pincer grasp. By 13 to 18 months, toddlers typically have much more advanced grasping skills, including the ability to pick up smaller objects, and may start using tools or utensils.
